CAPE TOWN / FALSE BAY

Kaap is the harbour's favourite son: the snoek who runs the False Bay ferries, wins every braai competition and smiles out from every tin of Proudly Cape smoked snoek. Tourists queue to have their photo taken with him. He says "lekker" more than any fish alive.

He is from Lüderitz. He came down the coast on a trawler at the age of three, as bycatch, and has been perfecting the accent ever since. The King found out from a customs form. Kaap has been paying for it, in favours and free ferry rides, for years.

He's entered Snoek'em to get his page back before the tins find out. Winning would make the crown Cape property for good. Losing would make him an export.

THE PRIZE The King Prawn keeps a book on every fish on the coast. Every year he hosts Snoek'em and puts Die Boek up as the prize. He has never lost. Every invitation comes with the fighter's own page enclosed, so they know what's at stake.
